Signs Your Boat Needs Polishing or Cosmetic Repair

If your gelcoat looks chalky, faded or dull, it’s oxidized and needs polishing. If the surface has chips, gouges or spider cracks, it needs cosmetic fiberglass repair first. Our boat polishing and fiberglass repair services cover both, and these six signs tell you which one your boat needs.

Chalky, oxidized blue gelcoat on a fiberglass boat hull on its trailer, with one wiped streak showing the deeper blue underneath and a small ding below the rub rail, in Dexter, Michigan

Sending photos from Dexter or nearby? Include one close-up of the worn area and one wider shot of the whole side, so we can see where it sits on the boat.

  • Chalky Residue

White powder on your hand. Rub the hull. If your palm comes away chalky, the gelcoat is oxidized. Michigan sun reflecting off the water breaks the surface down over long summer days.

  • Faded Color

Colors look washed out. The sides and deck that get the most sun turn lighter than sheltered areas, and colored hulls and stripes lose their depth.

  • Dull or Hazy Shine

No reflection, even when it’s clean. Oxidation and fine scratches leave gelcoat cloudy. Polishing and buffing take off that dull layer and bring the gloss back.

  • Cloudy Pontoon Tubes

Gray, streaky aluminum. Sun, lake water and waterline stains leave pontoon tubes flat and uneven. Polishing brings the aluminum back to a bright shine.

  • Chips & Dock Dings

Spots where the finish is missing. Bumping the dock or loading onto the trailer knocks out chips and gouges. Polishing can’t fill them, so they get gelcoat repair first.

  • Spider Cracks

Fine lines in a web pattern. Impacts and flexing crack the gelcoat. We check how deep they go: cracks in the gelcoat are cosmetic repair, cracks into the fiberglass below are not.

Some damage needs a marine repair shop. Soft spots, leaks or cracks that go into the structure are beyond cosmetic fiberglass repair. If your photos show that, we’ll tell you honestly.

Our Boat Polishing & Fiberglass Repair Services

Three services, all done at your home or dock in Whitmore Lake and nearby: polishing and buffing for fiberglass boats, pontoon polishing, and cosmetic fiberglass and gelcoat repair.

Worker buffing the navy blue fiberglass hull of a boat on its trailer with a rotary polisher, glossy where polished and chalky ahead of the pad, in a home driveway in Whitmore Lake, Michigan

Boat Polishing & Buffing

Oxidation is what the sun does to gelcoat: it breaks the surface down into a chalky, faded film. Polishing and buffing remove that light oxidation and bring the gloss back on the hull and topsides.

We look at your finish first and tell you what shine to expect, because lightly dulled gelcoat and heavily weathered gelcoat start from different places.

Worker polishing the aluminum tube of a pontoon boat on its trailer with a wool buffing pad, the polished section shining next to dull, spotted aluminum, in Ann Arbor, Michigan

Pontoon Polishing

Bare aluminum dulls fast on the water. Sun, lake water and the film it leaves turn pontoon tubes gray and streaky and fade the fence panels. We polish the tubes and panels back to a bright shine.

Tell us if you want the tubes, the panels or both, and send a photo of each so your estimate matches the job.

Worker spreading white gelcoat filler into scrapes along the bottom of a fiberglass boat hull on its trailer, with sanding blocks on a drop cloth, in a home driveway in Brighton, Michigan

Fiberglass & Gelcoat Repair

We repair chips, cracks, scratches, gouges and dock dings in fiberglass and gelcoat. Each spot is filled, shaped and blended into the finish around it.

Small chips are worth fixing early: open gelcoat lets water in, and chips and cracks spread. This is cosmetic repair, not structural work; see the signs of damage that needs a marine shop.

We Come to Your Home or Dock

Mobile boat polishing means you never haul your boat anywhere. Whether you’re in South Lyon or right on Whitmore Lake, tell us where it’s kept and whether it’s in the water at your dock or on a trailer at home.

Add one wider photo of the spot around it so we can see how we’ll reach each side. Need work on the house too? We also do surface restoration for doors, railings and trim, or browse all our services.

Dull Hull to Deep Shine: How Our Boat Polishing Works

It starts with your photos. Then we come to your home or dock, repair any chips or cracks, and polish last, so the shine comes out even across the whole boat.

Worker polishing the hull of a white and navy fiberglass bowrider on its trailer in a home driveway, with a polisher case and towels beside the open garage, in Chelsea, Michigan
  1. Send Photos

Send one photo of the full side and close-ups of the dull spots or damage, plus the boat type and length. Tell us where it’s kept, whether that’s a dock or a trailer in your Chelsea driveway.

  2. We Come to Your Boat

Photos get us started, but we check the finish in person at your home or dock before any work begins, so the plan matches what your boat actually needs.

  3. Repair Chips & Cracks

On fiberglass boats, chips, cracks and dock dings get filled and blended first. Polishing can’t fill missing gelcoat, so repairs come before the shine.

  4. Polish & Buff

Last comes hull polishing and buffing to take off the oxidation and bring the gloss back. On a pontoon, it’s the aluminum tubes and fence panels that get polished.

Boat Polishing Before & After

Same hull, same gelcoat, no paint. Polishing and buffing take off the chalky, oxidized layer so the color and gloss underneath come back, whether your boat sits on Whitmore Lake or on a trailer in Ypsilanti. Drag the slider to compare.

Red and white fiberglass bowrider polished to a deep, glossy red with clear reflections and bright white topsides, on its trailer in a home driveway in Ypsilanti, Michigan The same bowrider before polishing, its red hull faded, chalky and streaked from oxidation and its white topsides yellowed, on its trailer in a home driveway in Ypsilanti, Michigan

Drag to compare. Use the arrow keys when the slider is selected.

  • No Paint, Just Polish

The shine comes from the gelcoat you already have. Polishing removes the oxidized surface instead of covering it up. See boat polishing & buffing.

  • Chips Fixed First

Chips and dock dings get filled and blended before polishing, so the finished hull looks even from bow to stern. See how boat polishing works.

  • Pontoons Too

The same change works on aluminum: dull, streaky pontoon tubes polished back to a bright shine. See pontoon polishing.

Polishing Planned for Michigan Boats

Boats here spend long summer days in the sun on the water, and that sun is what turns gelcoat chalky and pontoon tubes gray. Docks and trailer loading add their share of chips and dings, and boats that sit out of the water all winter come back looking tired.

Wherever your boat is kept, the plan starts the same way: what the finish needs, whether any chips need repair first, and whether it’s at a dock or on a trailer at home.

Boat Polishing & Fiberglass Repair FAQ

Straight answers to the questions boat owners in Whitmore Lake, Ann Arbor, Brighton and nearby towns ask most about boat polishing, pontoon polishing and gelcoat repair.

What is boat polishing?

It’s buffing a boat’s fiberglass gelcoat to take off light oxidation and bring the shine back. We polish the hull and topsides at your home or dock. See boat polishing & buffing.

How do you remove oxidation from a boat?

Oxidation is the chalky, faded layer the sun leaves on gelcoat. Polishing and buffing take that light oxidation off and bring the color and gloss back. Heavier oxidation takes more work, so we look at your photos first.

Can faded gelcoat be restored?

Often, yes. When the fading is oxidation on the surface, polishing brings the color back, like the before and after above. We’ll tell you honestly from your photos what shine to expect.

How often should a boat be polished?

It depends on how much sun your boat gets and how it’s stored. A boat that sits at an open dock all summer dulls faster than one that’s covered. When the gelcoat starts looking chalky or hazy again, it’s time.

Can gelcoat chips and cracks be repaired?

Yes, as cosmetic repair. We fill, shape and blend chips, cracks, scratches, gouges and dock dings in fiberglass and gelcoat. See fiberglass & gelcoat repair.

Do you do structural fiberglass repair?

No. Our fiberglass repair is cosmetic. Soft spots, leaks or cracks that go into the structure need a marine repair shop, and we’ll tell you honestly if your photos show that.

Do you come to my dock or home?

Yes. We come to your home or dock, so you never haul your boat anywhere. Tell us whether it’s in the water at a dock or on a trailer at home. See how we come to you.

What boats do you work on?

Fiberglass boats and pontoons. Fiberglass boats get polishing and gelcoat repair, and pontoons get their aluminum tubes and fence panels polished.

Do you polish pontoons?

Yes. We polish aluminum pontoon tubes and fence panels back to a bright shine. Tell us if you want the tubes, the panels or both. See pontoon polishing.

Should I repair chips before polishing?

Yes. Polishing can’t fill missing gelcoat, and open chips let water in and spread. Repairing first means the shine comes out even across the whole hull.

Can you polish a boat that’s in the water?

Yes, we can polish at your dock. What we can reach depends on how the boat sits and the dock around it, so send a wider photo and we’ll confirm which areas we can do there.

What should I send for an estimate?

Your boat type (fiberglass or pontoon) and length, what’s wrong, where it’s kept and your town. Add one photo of the full side and close-ups of the problem areas, through the estimate form or to [email protected].

How much does boat polishing cost?

It depends on the boat’s size, how oxidized the gelcoat is, whether chips need repair first and, for pontoons, whether you want the tubes, the panels or both. Estimates are free, so send photos and we’ll give you a real number.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. 3rd Coat Restoration is licensed and insured, locally owned by Anthony Williams in Whitmore Lake, with more than 40 years of family experience in the trades.

What areas do you serve?

We offer mobile boat polishing and fiberglass repair in Whitmore Lake, Ann Arbor, Brighton, South Lyon, Dexter, Chelsea, Ypsilanti, Saline and Pittsfield Township, across Washtenaw, Livingston and southwest Oakland counties.
