Painters, Floor Coatings & Refinishing in Dexter, MI

Dexter grew up where Mill Creek runs into the Huron River, and its houses range from older homes near downtown to newer neighborhoods in the townships around it. Working out of Whitmore Lake, we paint them inside and out, coat basement and garage floors, refinish cabinets and hardwood, repair drywall and polish the boats kept nearby.

Getting to Know Dexter and the Work Its Homes Need

In 1824 Samuel W. Dexter, a lawyer and land speculator, bought the ground where Mill Creek flows into the Huron River, and the settlement that grew there carries his family’s name. Dexter stayed a village for more than 180 years until voters approved a city charter in November 2014. The 2020 census counted 4,500 residents, with Scio, Webster and Dexter townships surrounding the city.

Some local landmarks go back a long way. The Dexter Cider Mill has been pressing apples since 1886, and Gordon Hall, a Greek Revival house built in the early 1840s, joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Washtenaw County’s Border-to-Border Trail passes through town, and parts of Hudson Mills and Dexter–Huron metroparks sit inside the city limits.

Coated and Polished Floors for Dexter Garages and Basements

Every car that pulls into a Dexter garage in January drips salty slush onto the slab, and plain concrete soaks it up along with oil and dirt until the top starts to flake and crumble. A coated or polished floor keeps that mess on the surface, where a mop or squeegee takes care of it.

Whether your lower level is an older poured floor near downtown or a newer slab in the townships, we start by checking it over for cracks, old paint or sealer and stains. No basement is coated until a moisture test is done. Waterproofing is outside what we do, so a slab that lets in water needs a waterproofing company to correct it before any coating goes down.

Dexter and the Surrounding Towns

Dexter is in western Washtenaw County, where Mill Creek joins the Huron River. Our crew drives over from Whitmore Lake to the northeast, covering towns in both Washtenaw and Livingston counties, with South Lyon in Oakland County at the far east end.

The Same Steps From Town to Town

A house a few blocks off Main Street and a lake home out in the township get the same treatment. Send your address and a few pictures, we look them over, check back with you on anything unclear, and you get a free estimate that covers the prep along with the finish work.

Combining jobs is easy: hardwood refinishing with interior painting, or drywall repair with a garage floor coating, can be priced together on one estimate.

Dexter Homeowner FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear from Dexter-area homeowners before a project gets started.

My Dexter address is in Scio, Webster or Dexter Township. Can you still help?

Yes. A lot of homes with a Dexter mailing address are outside the city limits, and the surrounding townships are part of our regular area. Enter the street address on the estimate form and we will confirm it.

How long is the drive from your base to Dexter?

Whitmore Lake, our base, sits about 15 miles from downtown Dexter by road, typically about a 25-minute drive. The full list of towns we serve is on our service areas page.

Can my hardwood floors be stained a different color when you refinish them?

Yes. Once the old finish is sanded off, the bare wood can be stained before the new protective coat goes on, so the floor can take on a new color. Read more about hardwood floor refinishing.

Can you paint oak kitchen cabinets instead of re-staining them?

Yes. Cabinet refinishing can end in either a painted finish or a stain, so dated oak can be changed to a solid color if you prefer. Details are on our cabinet refinishing section.

Does a full kitchen remodel include new cabinets?

It can. Cabinet installation is part of our carpentry work, along with trim and baseboards, so new cabinets fit into a complete remodel with the walls, flooring and paint. See our kitchen and bath remodeling section.

Which floors can go in during a kitchen refresh?

We install luxury vinyl plank, laminate, tile and hardwood, so a refresh can include new flooring while the layout stays the same. Our interior renovation page lists everything that can be part of the job.

Do you paint ceilings as well as walls?

Yes. Interior painting covers ceilings, walls, trim, baseboards and doors, so one room or a whole floor can be done in a single project. Read about our interior painting.

Can you paint the stairway and railings inside my house?

Yes. Stairways and interior railings are part of our interior painting work, along with the walls and trim around them. Mention them on your estimate request so they are included.

Is polished concrete an option for a basement?

No. We offer polished concrete for garages only. Basements can have a flake coating, a mica floor or an acid stain instead, each applied after a moisture test. Compare them on our basement floor options.

My boat stays on a lake north of Dexter. Do you come to it?

Yes. We bring the polishing and cosmetic gelcoat repair to your house or dock, with the boat either floating or sitting on its trailer. Here is how our mobile boat service works.
