CHELSEA WASHTENAW COUNTY MICHIGAN

House Painting, Floor Coatings & Basement Finishing in Chelsea, MI

Chelsea grew up around a Michigan Central Railroad stop, took its name in 1850 from a settler's hometown in Massachusetts and had its historic downtown placed on the National Register in 2011. Working out of Whitmore Lake, our crew paints Chelsea homes inside and out, coats garage and barn floors, refinishes hardwood and finishes basements.

Chelsea at a Glance and the Home Projects We Take On

Settlers reached the Chelsea area around 1820, and it was organized as Sylvan Township in 1834. The Michigan Central Railroad laid track through in 1848, and the stop first called Kendon took the Chelsea name in 1850. It became a village in 1889 and a city in 2004, and the 2020 census counted 5,467 residents.

M-52 runs north to south through town as Main Street, I-94 forms the city’s southern edge and the Border-to-Border Trail crosses the city. The Clocktower, built in 1907 by the Glazier Stove Company to hold a water tank, still rises over downtown. Chelsea Milling Company has made Jiffy mixes here since 1930, and actor Jeff Daniels founded the Purple Rose Theatre in town.

Chelsea and the Countryside Its School District Covers

Chelsea School District serves the city and Sylvan Township, along with parts of Dexter, Freedom, Lima, Lyndon, Sharon and Waterloo townships, so a Chelsea address can mean a downtown side street or a lake lot miles out. Below are six spots around town, with a little history and the work we take on there.

Chelsea, Michigan ranch house getting its red brick sprayed a cream color by a masked painter, with plastic sheeting taped over the window and bushes Chelsea, Michigan bathroom after a remodel, with a white soaking tub standing free next to a glass-enclosed shower and a shaker vanity trimmed in brass Chelsea, Michigan garage opened to a sunny driveway, its floor finished in high-gloss swirled mica of cobalt blue, silver and charcoal
  • Downtown Chelsea

    Local notes
The historic district runs along Main Street from Orchard Street to North Street. Its brick storefronts went up after fires in the 1870s destroyed the earlier wooden buildings.
    Projects we handle
Interior repainting and drywall patching for older houses a short walk from Main Street.
  • Cavanaugh Lake

    Local notes
This lake sits in the northwest part of Sylvan Township. A tiny community there, spelled Kavanaugh Lake, had its own post office for less than a year, from 1893 to 1894.
    Projects we handle
Gelcoat polishing and pontoon tube cleanup for boats kept at lakefront homes, done at the dock.
  • Sylvan Township

    Local notes
Organized in 1834, the township surrounds Chelsea and had 3,311 residents in 2020, down from 6,425 in 2000 because Chelsea became its own city in 2004. Sylvan Center and Guthrie lie within it.
    Projects we handle
Mica flake floors for pole barns and workshops, plus garage slab coatings.
  • Lima Township

    Local notes
East of the city, Lima was organized in 1832 and counted 4,024 people in 2020. The settlement of Jerusalem began with a sawmill John Bingham built on Mill Creek that same year.
    Projects we handle
Kitchen and bath remodels paired with cabinet refinishing when the boxes are worth keeping.
  • Lyndon Township

    Local notes
In the county’s northwest corner, Lyndon had 2,656 residents in 2020, and water covers about 8.6% of its area. M-52 cuts across it on the way to Stockbridge.
    Projects we handle
Exterior repaints for lake and country homes, and railing refinishing on porches and steps.
  • Waterloo Recreation Area Edge

    Local notes
Michigan’s third-largest park spreads over more than 21,000 acres with 11 lakes and over 50 miles of trails. It was created during the Great Depression and reaches into western Washtenaw County.
    Projects we handle
Lower-level finishing and coated basement floors, after a moisture check on the concrete.

Coated and Polished Concrete for Chelsea Garages and Basements

Concrete around Chelsea works hard: attached garages, pole barns and shops on country lots, and basements turned into family rooms. An unsealed slab soaks in oil, salt and grit and keeps shedding dust, while a coated or polished floor closes up the surface so spills wipe away and the space looks finished.

Lower levels get a closer look first. We look for cracks, stains and any leftover paint or sealer, then do a moisture test on the slab. Waterproofing is a separate trade we do not offer, so any water coming in needs a specialist’s repair before a coating goes down.

Boat Polishing and Repair Brought to Chelsea

Whether your boat rests on a trailer beside a Chelsea house or stays in the water at a lakefront dock all summer, we set up where it is kept. You never have to haul it to a shop.

Chelsea and the Rest of Our Service Map

Chelsea lies in western Washtenaw County along I-94, about 15 miles west of Ann Arbor and roughly 26 road miles from Whitmore Lake. It is the westernmost of our nine towns, and our coverage stretches east from here toward Ypsilanti and north through Livingston County to South Lyon.

How Every Chelsea Project Gets Started

A bungalow near downtown and a lake house in Lyndon Township get identical treatment. Fill in the form with your address and project, we look it over and ask whatever we still need to know, then you receive a free estimate laying out each step.

Several projects at once are welcome. Interior painting paired with hardwood refinishing, or a pole barn floor with exterior paint on the house, can be priced together.

Beyond the Chelsea Area?

Homes west toward Grass Lake or north toward Stockbridge may still be within reach. Type your street address into the form above and we will confirm either way.

Chelsea Homeowner Questions

Straight answers to what people in Chelsea and the nearby townships ask before booking work with us.

Do you take jobs in Sylvan, Lima and Lyndon townships?

Yes. Many Chelsea mailing addresses are outside city limits in Sylvan, Lima or Lyndon Township, and we serve all three. Include your full street address in the form so we can check it.

Chelsea is at the far west end of your area. How far do you travel to get here?

It is roughly 26 miles by road from our Whitmore Lake base, usually a drive of about 35 minutes. Chelsea is one of the nine towns we cover, listed alongside the others on our area list.

My pole barn has a gravel floor. Can you coat it?

Not as it is. Our floor systems go over concrete only, so a gravel or dirt floor needs a slab poured by a concrete contractor first. Once the concrete is in, a mica floor or flake coating can go on top.

Can you coat the floor of a detached garage?

Yes. Detached and attached garages are treated the same way. We check the slab, prep it based on its condition and then apply the finish you pick. Details are on the garage coating page.

My older house has wood clapboard with loose paint. What does the prep involve?

Loose and flaking paint is scraped off, rough edges are sanded and bare wood is primed before new coats go on. Soft or rotted boards are repaired first through our wood rot repair. See exterior painting for more.

Is my weathered wood front door worth saving?

Usually. When the wood underneath is solid, the worn finish is taken off and the door is stained or painted again. If it is too damaged, we will say so. Learn about front door refinishing.

Can you replace just the bathroom vanity and floor?

Yes. That is a bathroom refresh: the tub, toilet and shower stay, while we swap the vanity and floor and freshen the trim and paint. Both levels of work appear in the kitchen and bathroom part of our renovation page.

Do you install vinyl plank flooring in basements?

Yes. Luxury vinyl plank is one of the floors we install, and it is a common pick for finished lower levels. The concrete gets a moisture test before anything goes down. Learn about basement finishing.

Is it possible to refinish the hardwood and then paint the same rooms?

Yes. Both can be part of one project, so the floor refinishing and the interior painting are planned around each other.

Where should I send pictures of my project?

Use [email protected] for photos, and include your name and address. The estimate form does not accept uploads, so pictures always come by email.
