The settlement first known as Thompson’s Corners dates to 1832, the same year the surrounding township was named Lyon after state legislator Lucius Lyon. South Lyon took its name from its spot within that township, incorporated as a village in 1873 and as a city in 1930. The 2020 census counted 11,746 people, and downtown Detroit is about 36 miles away.
Railroads shaped the town. Lines arrived in 1871, 1880 and 1883, and the old Grand Trunk branch, used until the early 1980s, is now a paved bike trail through town. A CSX main line between Detroit and Grand Rapids still runs through South Lyon today.

A worn surface in a South Lyon home is often a cosmetic problem, not a structural one.
